Educating young children is indeed a challenge in present societies. The new generation needs to be provided with the awareness, abilities and mental strength to take up responsibilities in real world situations. The value systems and attitudes of young children have to be guided and defined. Children have many developmental needs; some have learning disabilities, others have emotional and behavioural problems that have to be identified and addressed. Above all the real challenge lies in designing meaningful curriculum that helps to develop and sustain healthy, productive and ethical minds.
Towards this need IEAS follows a holistic approach to educating children. The environment is essentially child-centred and focuses on developing mutual trust and understanding between the teacher and the student. Our educational goals are oriented towards confidence building, developing intellectual curiosity with scope for exploration and hands on learning as well as fostering a spirit of living in harmony.
IEAS follows a Continuous and Comprehensive Assessment System from Class I to Class X. As per the CBSE recommendations, examinations and a pass/fail system are not suitable for young children since they foster performance anxiety leading to physical and mental illness. Creative and continual assessments are more beneficial in judging the strengths and weaknesses of young children. Comprehensive assessments help the teacher gauge the psycho-social dimensions of education. The Grading system and personalized subject wise comments help the teacher and parent reflect on the multidimensional abilities of the child in a non-competitive manner. It is our effort as educators to focus on children as ‘persons’ first and not just as ‘ranks, grades and scores’.
The monthly assessment consists of monitoring the daily class work, classroom interaction, logical reasoning abilities, practical work, subject wise skill testing, social responses and aptitude of the child. These are categorized according to the subject requirements and form 60% for Classes I – V and 40% for Classes VI – X of each assessment.
Work sheets are not examinations. They merely serve to instill in the child the required retentive skills and focus on specific topic oriented learning outcomes. Assessments help the teacher and parent have a clear picture on the strengths and weaknesses of each child. Assessment Records will be sent home. Students of Classes VI – X will have an End-Semester examination. This is to initiate them into the examination system followed from class XI. Students will write a 90/60 mark paper in each of the 5 major subjects. Each paper will be of 3/2-hour’s duration. A specific timetable and portions for the same will be given in advance. At the end of the Semester, report cards are prepared with subject wise comprehensive grades and teachers comments. The following table gives you a clear picture of the evaluation system for standards I-V and VI-X respectively.
The end term assessment for std VI to X is as follows in the five major subjects.
VI – VIII | 20 % of FA 1/ FA3 + 20 % of FA2/ FA4 + 60% End semester Exam |

Whether or not practice work is given by school, it is important that school lessons be reinforced at home in a low conflict environment so that children develop a natural love for learning and a thirst for knowledge. As the teacher and parent identify areas of weakness in the child, this time may be used fruitfully to improve and practice on these areas. As per the directives of the CBSE, we are trying to reduce the bag load of our students. In this regard, students of Std I have not been prescribed any textbooks for English, Maths and EVS. The students will be given handouts in class which have to be neatly filed and maintained at home. All students should carry only
